Since the 2000s, the petroleum market has had to deal with many changes, including new fuels such as biofuels: biodiesel in diesel oils, bioethanol in gasoline, etc. It also had to deal with lower sulphur content, which is an obvious ecological choice. Combining these two new regulations (biofuels + ULS) generated new technical problems for petroleum market operators and users.

Indeed, the refining process necessary to obtain the low-sulphur fuels added to the presence of contaminants in biofuels consequently multiplied the presence of bacteria, mold, yeast, and sludge. It often ends with problems due to clogged filters, eventually unhappy customers.

NEW STANDARDS

International fuel standards have evolved, particularly in the European Union, where fuels are becoming more homogenized. They also include increasing proportions of biofuels in all petroleum products.

New labels apply on October 12, 2018. The composition of fuels is still unchanged, only the names are updated: E5 for gasoline containing 5% ethanol, E10 for gasoline containing 10% ethanol, B7 for diesel containing up to 7% FAME, etc.

Each type of fuel has a specific label.

  • Gasoline: gasoline-based fuels are represented by a circle. The “E” is followed by a number representing the maximum biofuel content.
  • Diesel: diesel-based fuels are represented by a square. The “B” is followed by a number representing the maximum biofuel content: B7 or B10. XTL is synthetic diesel.
  • Gaseous fuels: Gaseous fuels are represented by a diamond. They are hydrogen, CNG, LPG, and LNG.

Independent fuel distributors have to face two major competing industries: large oil companies on the one hand, and large distribution chains on the other.

The oil companies have large budgets to invest in advertising campaigns and develop their own chemical cocktails of fuel additives. On the other hand, the distribution chains have the capacity to buy huge quantities of fuels. They do this in order to sell fuels at low prices, undermining quality at the pump.

Intertek Caleb Brett, SGS, Saybolt and Bureau Veritas laboratories have analyzed several XBEE fuels (diesel oil, unleaded gasoline, heating oil, MDO, heavy fuel oil, biofuels, etc.) and observed, then certified, that they all were in compliance with the European and international standards.

ENGINE GUARANTEES

XBEE Enzyme Fuel Technology has been submitted to the CEC tests: F-23-A-01 for Diesel engines and F-05-A-93 for Gasoline engines. These tests are necessary to validate the fact that a product related to fuels is safe and secured for all engines. The CEC testing protocols are recognized by the ACEA, said association gathers all the major automotive manufacturers.

Many laboratories have had the opportunity to observe, within campaigns of accredited measurements, the impact of the XBEE natural fuel treatment on greenhouse gas emissions. Whereas these were made on diesel oil, gasoline, biofuels of HFOs 180 and 380, results were always remarkable.
