Bugsier Reederei uses XBEE technology to remove carbon deposits in engines.

Bugsier Reederei (Fairplay Towage Group) is a shipping company based in Hamburg, Germany (founded in 1866). It offers a variety of services; offshore assistance and towing, coastal towing, pontoon transport, salvage, and harbor mooring. It currently operates the largest fleet of tugs under the German flag: 29 tugs, 5 pontoons, and 3 protection vessels.

At the beginning of 2012, they decided to use XBEE technology for engine decarbonizing of the “Bugsier 21”. A strategy that seeks new technologies and means to improve fleet maintenance.

Bugsier fleet is composed of almost 40 units:

  • 29 tugs, 5 pontoons, and 3 marine protection.

  • Length: 30.62 meters
  • Main engines: Twin-Voith Schneider Propeller 28 G II/210
  • Bollard pull: 51 tons

Bugsier 18:

  • Length: 28.30 meters
  • Main engines: Twin-Voith Propeller 26 G II/165
  • Bollard pull: 31 tons

At the beginning of 2012, the company always being in search of new technologies and better maintenance for its fleet, Jürgen Hinrichs decided to evaluate the XBEE Enzyme Fuel Technology in one tug: the Bugsier 21.

After about one year of using enhanced diesel oil, the results are convincing: the engines are clean, filters are clean too, a lot fewer carbon deposits in the cylinders, etc. The decision is now taken to use XBEE in the whole fleet to offer a top clean fleet of modern tugs to Bugsier Reederei’s customers.
